How We Compute
  • Per-mL drinks (drip, pour-over, French press, cold brew, moka): Total mg = strength (mg/mL) × volume (mL).
  • Espresso drinks (espresso, cappuccino, latte, flat white, americano, mocha, ristretto, lungo): Total mg = strength (mg/shot) × number of shots.
  • Daily total = sum of all items; mg/kg = daily total ÷ body weight in kg (we auto-convert from lb).
  • Largest single dose = biggest per-item caffeine amount you added (optionally time-stamped).
  • Guidelines: Adults ≤400 mg/day; single doses ≤200 mg. Pregnancy/trying/breastfeeding: <200 mg/day. Teens: ≤100 mg/day and ≤3 mg/kg/day. Children <12: avoid caffeine.
  • Actual caffeine varies by bean, roast, grind, ratio, and brew method. If symptoms (palpitations, anxiety, insomnia) occur, reduce intake and consider consulting a clinician.
Sources: FDA, EFSA, ACOG, AAP, Mayo Clinic. Coffee strengths are baseline estimates; adjust with “Override strength” for your recipe.

Why Monitor Your Caffeine Intake?

Caffeine can boost alertness, mood, and even physical performance. But too much may cause:

  • Jitters and anxiety
  • Insomnia or disrupted sleep
  • Rapid heartbeat or palpitations
  • Upset stomach

Tracking helps you enjoy your coffee responsibly while avoiding unpleasant side effects.

Safe Daily Caffeine Limits

According to health experts:

  • Healthy adults: Up to 400 mg/day is considered safe (≈ 4 cups of brewed coffee).
  • Pregnant, trying, or breastfeeding: Keep intake below 200 mg/day.
  • Teens (12–18 years): Limit to 100 mg/day or ≤ 3 mg per kg of body weight.
  • Children under 12: Best to avoid caffeine entirely.

👉 These numbers come from FDA, EFSA, ACOG, and the American Academy of Pediatrics (see references).

How the Calculator Works

Our calculator makes it easy to log your drinks:

  1. Choose your coffee type – espresso, americano, pour-over, moka pot, etc.
  2. Add volume (mL) or shots – to match your recipe.
  3. Optionally add time – to track when you had each drink.
  4. Get instant results:
    • Total caffeine per day (mg)
    • Caffeine per kg of body weight (mg/kg)
    • Largest single dose in one sitting
    • A status check (safe, near limit, or over the limit)

  • Switch to decaf or tea in the afternoon to protect sleep.
  • Adjust based on your sensitivity — some people feel effects at much lower doses.

Frequently Asked Questions About Caffeine Intake

Is 400 mg of caffeine a day safe?

For most healthy adults, up to 400 mg of caffeine per day is considered safe. That’s about four 8-oz cups of brewed coffee. However, sensitivity varies from person to person.

How much caffeine should pregnant women have?

Health experts recommend limiting caffeine to less than 200 mg per day during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Can teenagers drink coffee?

Yes, but in moderation. Teens aged 12–18 should keep caffeine below 100 mg/day or 3 mg per kilogram of body weight. Energy drinks and espresso shots can easily exceed this.

How much caffeine is in a latte?

A standard latte usually contains 63 mg of caffeine per shot of espresso. A tall latte with two shots has about 126 mg. (See our full guide)

How do I know how much caffeine is in my coffee?

Caffeine levels depend on the brewing method, bean type, and serving size. Use the Caffeine Intake Calculator above to input your drink type and volume for an estimate.

Is decaf coffee caffeine-free?

No. Decaf coffee still contains about 1–2 mg per 240 mL cup, which is much less than regular coffee.

What happens if I drink too much caffeine?

Excess intake may cause jitters, anxiety, digestive upset, trouble sleeping, and rapid heart rate. In rare cases, very high doses can be dangerous.
